Demand for specialist skills grows in Q1 of 2012 –Competition for talent within the TMT sector

Specialist executive search organisation Expand have reported positive trends within the TMT (telecommunications, media, technology) recruitment markets since the start of the year. Demand has been considerably stronger in specific areas, including Cloud Computing, E-commerce and international mobile firms, who, according to the Managing Director of Expand

Samantha Maxwell-Reed, remains resilient throughout uncertain economic climates.

“Our clients are cautious when planning headcount and are ensuring they recruit in exactly the right areas to support their current business needs” Samantha states. “There are some exceptional opportunities across the TMT markets, with four key industry drivers: competition, customers, deregulation and technological advances. Candidates demonstrating desirable skills are having a choice of role and experiencing fast turnarounds as clients attempt to secure the highest quality people”.

Indicators point to a continued demand for specialist skills, and Expand have seen a 100% increase in retained search projects when compared with January 2011. Samantha believes that “…the trend in retaining us to fill important, hard to fill roles, often in diverse locations, indicates employers are seriously considering the process which will guarantee them access to the best choice of talent out there – a dedicated research and headhunting programme often delivers against challenging requirements”.

Expand have also experienced an increase in international assignments, with current projects taking place not only now in the UK, but also Latin America, North America, Northern Europe and the Middle East.

The Business Development Director at Expand Executive Search, Aidan Walker, is highly optimistic about the recruitment prospects across the TMT sectors in 2012: “We work in a highly specialised set of industry verticals which have constant requirements for top quality people” confirms Aidan. “I am excited about the many technological advances planned for the year ahead, across all areas of telecommunications, media and technology – from NFC revolutionising the payments industry, to Cloud changing how we work forever. Based on what we’ve experienced so far, 2012 will be a busy and challenging time”.

Healthy competition inspired by healthy eating

According to figures recently published by the DWP in the Sickness Absence Review, a staggering 140 million days are lost due to sickness absence.   Whilst as a business, we don’t have a sickness problem, we value the well-being of our employees and ensure we promote a healthy workplace with various active initiatives.

Active Sussex approached us about an initiative to promote Active and Healthy programmes in the workplace.  Active Sussex are a County Sports Partnership , mainly funded by the Government to coordinate and facilitate the delivery of sport and physical activity.

Following a brain storm about how we could bid for funding, we contacted Surrey-based, Susie White at Blue Broccoli Nutritional Therapy and she put together a nutrition proposal which we submitted to Active Sussex – and subsequently won! As massive foodies, we committed to ditch the biscuits, chocolate and afternoon cake in favour of fruit  and nuts and an overall intention to eat more healthily.

Susie prepared two fascinating seminars – in the first, we learnt how to eat well to manage stress (who knew that the adrenals were so important?) and have more energy.  This was really insightful as Susie talked about the effect of stress on the body – not just about what we should eat – but also covered off lifestyle considerations such as stress management and exercise.

Then came the inevitable competition ….. With £2 a head we had to come up with a healthy lunch sourced from any of our local shops.  With a practical attitude Team Edwards went off, split into two and chose their lunch using inspiration from the supermarket, whereas Team Walker, with military precision, planned on paper what would work best and who would shop vs chop and prepare. We learned that eating well need not be expensive and the creative element of creating lunch was fun.

As you can see (below) we both came up with similar meals – chicken, salad, rice or cous cous along with some energy boosting B-vitamin containing mixed beans!

After lunch the session was all about getting your 5 a day, what counted as a portion size (who knew 8 spring onions = 1 portion??) and we came up with ideas on how we could easily eat more fruit and vegetables through our snacks and lunch.

And so what have we learnt…..?  Well the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say, and so Susie has set us a challenge.  For 2 weeks we are keeping food diaries, recording what we eat and spend, so that she can assess us for the best value healthy eating plans!

The winner gets to carry the mantle of ‘Healthiest Eater’ and also wins a 3 month subscription to Graze.com.

For more details on Susie and Blue Broccoli, visit her website or read her blog at www.bluebroccoli.net and to learn more about Active Sussex here.

What we made:

Team Edwards (above left): Chicken, butter beans, cannellini beans, spring onion,  rice, brown rice, red, yellow and green peppers (coming in 22p under  budget).

Team Walker (right): Chicken, mixed  bean, spring onions, cous cous with pepper , beans & chick peas, avocado, spinach and iceberg lettuce (coming in 4p under budget)

Reasons for running the incentive

Absence can have a very direct impact on our work force. From a financial point of view staff sickness is low – and we want this to continue.

However, it seems crazy that we train our staff to be good sales people or managers, but don’t consider that mental and physical well-being has an impact on performance and attitude at work. With the right tools we can equip them in this area too.

In terms of staff well-being it is important that staff have a good work/life balance and if we can help ease stress and boost their energy at work – it means that staff are not leaving the office, returning home to their families – exhausted, grumpy and burnt out .  In addition, we took on a team challenge to run a 10k in aid of a local charity Chestnut Treehouse Children’s Hospice (raising over £1,200). As a result of the training it prompted us to look at what we eat and whether we can address healthy eating as a team – to support each other to make changes to our diets.

What Benefits Your Staff??

With recent events, including stock market falls, the escalating sovereign debt crises, US credit rating downgrade and the near-stalling of growth in the developed world, we have been considering if the world’s fundamental economic changes are impacting employee motivations and subsequently their engagement with their employer.

If financial rewards are harder to come by, are personal drivers changing and what underpins employee engagement in this new world?

Employee engagement is a term used to describe a concept in which an employee is fully committed to and enthusiastic about their employer.  If financial rewards and hard cash are less prevalent what, in this new world, drives employee engagement?

Recognising that employee engagement is influenced by many factors, we started our research by looking at what benefits employees value over their salary. We polled 350 people and their responses were insightful.

We were surprised to learn that a significant majority (48%) of people value flexible working above any other benefit – which as a practice, creates limited  additional cost to a business.

Other responses favoured:

Flexible working suggests that people now seek a more rewarding work/life balance. Perhaps historically unpopular as a concept, flexible working can support the demands of the employer, particularly where virtual teams operate across different time zones.  Clearly this creates a new debate over leadership style, performance management challenges and possible degradation of culture and sense of ‘team’.

In looking at the comments, our poll also suggests that the importance of benefits changes according to life stage.  It was evident that those at earlier stages in their career, value training and professional development as a preference, especially if it leads to promotion or a new role.

What it is important to remember though is that the role remains important – One respondent said “I look for both money and a stimulating work environment.  Money and flexible working are fine but if you are bored rigid and hate every minute of your working day, then what’s the point?”

Although there are different preferences for genders, seniority level and even life stages, engaged employees are stimulated, challenged and enjoy benefits that need not directly cost an employer money.

We are keen to hear from clients who have looked at their employee engagement policy, with specific focus on benefits, or who have introduced a flexible working policy.

expand Go Ape!

Bedgebury forest in the heart of Kent was the setting for expand’s much anticipated visit to the GoApe! outdoor centre.

Having beaten their Q2 targets, the team plus family members, prepared to tackle the tree-top challenge fuelled on by the knowledge that a ground level BBQ and celebratory drinks would be waiting at the other end.

Basked in glorious sunshine and after a thorough safety briefing, each member set off on a course that got progressively higher and more challenging at each stage.

With tree top crossings, zip wires and Tarzan swings, highlights were plentiful;

Aidan Walker tackling a tricky dual log crossing drew applause in scenes you might expect from the set of Cliffhanger and David White won the unofficial ‘Cleanest t-shirt at the end’ competition after delivering textbook landings from the zip wires dotted around the course.

As the BBQ kicked off, talk quickly turned to fears conquered, who had the most bruises and the inevitable post-event bragging;

“I definitely could have taken it higher” stated Richard Edwards, one of the few who’d successfully negotiated the tricky stirrup crossing.

With the adrenaline wearing off and the cold beers drained, the expand team made their way home for a well-deserved early night to be followed by the inevitable sore arms in the morning.

Refreshed and ready for another busy week in the expand office; thoughts have already turned to the next incentive knowing a combination of individual effort and team work can lead us to another one-off experience. Go karts anyone?

expand pull on their running shoes for Chestnut Tree House

10 expand employees are exchanging shirts and ties for running shorts and trainers this September, to take part in the annual Chestnut Tree House 10k Coastal Run, raising vital funds for the only children’s hospice in Sussex.

MD Samantha will be joined by Danielle, Billy, Robin, Winnie, Tom, Aidan, Laura, Lee and Richard, and 600 other runners already registered for the 10k, as we run the route along Littlehampton seafront on Sunday 11 September.

Preparations are well underway for the event; some of us going on training runs in Hove Park and others choosing Brighton seafront to build up fitness and stamina. Samantha says ‘Running is new to most of us, but this seemed like a challenge that we could all achieve. I’m so proud of my team for the way they have pulled together and thrown themselves into the fundraising.’

‘At expand, we have always been active fundraisers, so this year we decided to put all of our efforts into helping one local charity. A member of our team, Billy, had visited Chestnut Tree House and was so inspired by the amazing work that went on there that we decided to commit to helping support life-limited children and their families. We have set ourselves a target of raising £1,000 for the 10k run, which we know will make a real difference to Chestnut Tree House.’

As well as taking part in the 10k Coastal Run, we are already planning other fundraising initiatives. To sponsor us, visit our page at www.justgiving.com/expandexecsearch

Event organiser, Leanne Willard from Chestnut Tree House, added: ‘We are thrilled that the team at expand has entered the 10k run this year. The event attracts lots of individual runners, both serious and beginners, but our corporate supporters are so important. Not only is it a great team building opportunity for them, we hope they will have a lot of fun too. We look forward to seeing them at the start line and will be cheering them on all the way to the finish.’

So support expand by donating a few pounds, coming to cheer us on or, if you are feeling fit, running alongside us!

Registration for the Chestnut Tree House 10k Coastal Run is open now. It starts at 9.30am on Littlehampton seafront and is open to anyone over 16 years old. It costs just £12 to enter in advance or £15 on the day. Register online at www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk/events or call the Events Team on 01903 871817.

Surveying the situation

We pride ourselves on being committed to developing and enhancing the service we offer to our clients.  But how good is our service?  As the old saying goes you have to put your ‘money where your mouth is’ and so with this (and good practice) in mind, we put ourselves on the line!

We asked our clients for some honest feedback in a short online poll in exchange for a donation from us to a local charity, Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, for all responses received.  We got some great feedback, with a mixture of compliments and suggestions for improvement.

Overall, we’re pleased to say that 53% of our clients said that we’re more effective than our competitors which is great news and something we will be striving to increase in our next survey results. As one client testifies, “I have worked with a large number of agencies and only a small few would I consider true partners.  Expand have been a real complementary service and a great pleasure to deal with…their genuine and collaborative approach is a real asset.”

We asked clients to ‘strongly agree’, ‘agree’ or ‘disagree’ as to how we stack up against a range of key areas.  Some of the highlights from the survey show:

  • We excel in understanding the specific requirements of our clients roles (95% agree)
    • “sector knowledge was invaluable” , “more candidates, better quality and very good level of service.”
  • We’re responsive to requests (60% strongly agree and 34% agree)
    • my consultant moved at lightning speed to get me a shortlist of candidates in just a couple of days.”
  • Our effectiveness in negotiating offers and securing candidates (44% strongly agree, 44% agree)
    • “ we got the guy we wanted.”

One area in which we received lots of feedback is that clients would like us to carry out salary surveys, helping to increase our effectiveness in providing marketing insights (81% agree).  As a first part of this, we have undertaken research on what benefits employees value above their salary.

In general there were no really negative areas, and moving forwards we’ve got lots of client meetings planned to close any gaps – perhaps where clients haven’t been dealing with us for a while, or where we weren’t successful in placing someone.  It has provided us with a great opportunity to find out what clients really think and understand how we can work more closely with them.

And of course, not forgetting that a very worthy cause, Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice in Arundel, will benefit as we’re donating money for all surveys returned.  Just one of a number of ways we are helping to raise funds for them!

I’ll just drop you a text…(by prior arrangement)

Research suggests that the volume of SMS messages will double to 10 trillion by 2013. In our personal lives we all text a lot – to say hi, to let people know we’re running late, to get in touch when we haven’t got time to speak and so the list goes on.  But it’s not so common that we use it for business use…or is it?

Recently in a team catch-up we were talking about a client who had requested interviews be confirmed via SMS. The logic being, that his diary moves so fast, that SMS offers the only way to work in ‘real time’.  It felt  strange – almost too ‘personal’.  However, in an age where clients often require instant updates is it ok to use texts for business use?

To dig a bit deeper we created a poll on LinkedIn, updated our statuses and tweeted our followers to get some feedback. Our question: “Are you happy for recruiters to communicate with you via SMS?” Results showed that 60% of respondents are happy for recruiters to communicate via SMS but 40% disagreed and said they aren’t.

We also got some interesting comments with the ‘no’ camp feeling that SMS is too informal and could be regarded a bit like spam if they are poorly sent.  We all know that recruitment is a people business, so there is a risk that the casual and slightly detached method of communicating via text can reek of laziness and not caring. It can also give an impression of being slightly over-familiar (unless invited) and as one respondent said “for people I don’t know it’s similar to them walking into my garage instead of knocking on the front door.”

However with an established relationship, where SMS has been agreed as an appropriate method of communicating then it was felt acceptable for quick, immediate or urgent messages. It confirmed our view that we would never use this (or any other!) format for bulk marketing.

So the message is, as we already know in business, it’s really about understanding your clients/contacts and finding out what works for them and how you can best communicate. Getting it wrong can be not only fatal, but also bad manners!

Let us know what you think about your experiences with business to business SMS…

Showing our commitment in a charitable way

Commitment is one our values, and a bold statement. This largely manifests itself in our focus and energy when working for clients and candidates, to get a job well done. However we also have a commitment to our local community and historically have undertaken a number of fundraising activities on an ad hoc basis – the London to Brighton bike ride, 10k runs and often cake eating..!

We have now decided to commit to one charity and hopefully our energy will make a difference in a positive way.   A number of us here at expand have kids, and just recently we learnt about an exceptional local children’s charity which pricked our conscience.

Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice, near Arundel, provides expert palliative care, practical advice and support to children with life-limiting illnesses – and their families – right across Sussex.

As the only children’s hospice in Sussex, it offers care for children in a variety of different ways.  A team of skilled nurses and care support workers provide day care or respite care in the house.  Families can choose to stay in the special family accommodation at the house or leave their children in the capable hands of the Care Team while they take a break for a few days.  There are also activity days and outings during the holidays for the children and their siblings.

We are delighted to announce that we will be supporting Chestnut Tree House, and Samantha Maxwell-Reed (our MD) had this to say: “We have been inspired by the uplifting work of the team at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and are committed to support them via a number of initiatives this year”.

One of the first ways that we will raise awareness of the charity will be via our 2011 client satisfaction survey.  Each time we get a survey back, we’ll make a donation to the charity. So not only does the charity benefit, but we’ll also get valuable feedback on how we can improve our service to clients.  It’s a winner all round!

If you’re one of our clients, look out of for the survey – coming soon!

Visibility breeds credibility

We’ve recently had some photos taken of all the team for our LinkedIn accounts.  As a business networking tool, it’s really important to be represented in a professional way.  Whilst a lot of members shy away from a picture on their LinkedIn profile, we believe it’s essential for several reasons:

  1. This is a people business – you want to know who you are networking with
  2. Without it your profile will never be 100% complete
  3. How else (potentially) are your contacts/candidates going to remember you after meeting you at a meeting or networking event? That visual prompt could be just what they need.

expand group - Oct 2012

Of course, there are pictures and pictures – so the key is always to use a corporate-looking professional head shot.  We tried to capture the spirit of the team and hope our pictures show us as human and approachable.

This led us to have a discussion in the office as to whether it was a good or bad thing to feature recruiter pictures on the site? Given the international nature of our work, it is impossible to meet all our contacts, so we feel it’s important.

Some recruitment companies choose not to include consultant photos or names, for fear of head-hunters poaching their people.  But we aren’t paranoid about losing our consultants and most importantly we WANT people to know who everyone is.

So to that end ….meet the Expand team (above) and if you want, you can even have a bit more of a snoop by watching our video which is posted on YouTube…

expand outperforms the market

Expand Executive Search have continued to out-perform the overall recruitment market, posting revenue growth of over 23% in 2010. Managing Director of the executive search firm, Samantha Maxwell-Reed, explained her thoughts behind the companies continued growth: “…much of this growth was achieved through international assignments and new executive search projects – we worked very hard, but it was worth it.”

As a large number of organisations face their financial year end, Samantha remains optimistic and reflective that, although it will take longer for the economy as a whole to recover “…we currently have substantial and exciting opportunities within our clients markets”. As with any business bucking the recessionary trend, there is a high level of interest in capturing the secret of Expand’s success. Samantha is sure that the company’s experience, track record of achieving often challenging assignments alongside an excellent reputation within specialist markets is key. “International clients require real speed of delivery coupled with the confidence that our well researched shortlists will contain the most relevant, successful and interesting rising stars with which to grow their own business “she says.

“In a candidate rich market, executive search projects are steadily increasing – with clients receiving a deluge of CV’s for advertised roles, we are in a position to establish the best – not the first – candidate for each role.” Samantha comments. The cost of a failed appointment is now commonly understood and Expand’s clients appear to demand recruitment partners who understand their market, the overall recruitment landscape and can deliver a project based assignment effectively, within budget and the required timescale.

“As we enter the new financial year” says Samantha “we remain confident that our markets offer exciting opportunities, and that we will continue to enjoy recruiting in new geographies – Saudi Arabia, Argentina and Russia being new territories for us so far this year. We are very excited about 2011!”

expand skydive!

all smiles afterwards!

Some of the braver members of the expand recruitment team came down to earth with a bump recently, following an exciting sky dive from 12,000ft!

Robin Somerville, Andrew Selley and Billy Nixon, all based at the expand recruitment Brighton offices, were lucky enough to win a very special prize for achieving their targets for the previous month. The boys decided to choose a once in a lifetime experience to celebrate a great month, and all travelled to Headcorn Airfield in Kent to take part in their first ever tandem skydive jump.

“We were hoping for fog, rain or low cloud…anything that would lead to the jump being cancelled and sending us for an early pub lunch..!” joked Billy. “However, by the time we had been to our safety briefing and got kitted up, the sun was shining and there was hardly any wind – perfect jumping conditions!”

Despite some mild stress when the ground crew produced some weighing scales(!), everyone made the target weight and the expert team at the airfield led the intrepid trio of brave (and slightly scared!) consultants to the aircraft. They then climbed to 12,000ft before jumping, with a thrilling 45 seconds of freefall at 120mph, before an exciting four minute descent under the parachute canopy.

Robin, Andrew & Billy have all confirmed that they would love to do another skydive again soon, and each found the experience an exciting and thrilling way to celebrate a great month at expand recruitment.

Why are our values important?

The expand team recently completed a project to determine our key values. This was not a marketing exercise, to generate more rhetoric, we had a clear reason.

‘Expandlands’ raise money for NSPCC

Brighton based expand recruitment and sister company Grovelands Resourcing took to the saddle on Sunday 20th June, raising £715 for the NSPCC.  Seven members of both companies donned green NSPCC t-shirts and rode alongside 27,000 cyclists over 54 miles from London to Brighton.

Setting off at 8.45am and intending to stick together, the team soon split due to the sheer number of cyclists.  Adam Benoy, despite stopping of for BBQ on the way, finished in a respectable 5 hours 15 minutes with the last of the saddle-sore group coming in just under 3 hours later. Adam said ““An excellent day! It was both challenging and rewarding and we we’re all very humbled by the public support along the way, very hard work but made all worth-while for a great cause”.
With nothing other than a few scrapes and the odd bruise to report, the team are back at work on Monday, tired but very proud of their achievement!

Both companies have a number of new fund raising ideas planned for the future and will definitely be taking part in the 2011 London to Brighton bike ride.

expand recruitment’s youtube movie gets top viewing

Successful recruitment company, Brighton based expand recruitment spread its new media wings by launching a short youtube movie to support its own recruitment drive.

Since going live 2 months ago the clip has created enormous interest and helped expand source 4 new team members. Response came from far and wide; London, Leeds and even The Netherlands.

Highly skilled individuals with backgrounds in executive search, are now on board adding to the dynamic and creative mix of expand’s growing team.

Founder and Director, Samantha Maxwell-Read said:

“We’re all fans of social networking and new media here with Broadcast and Digital Technology forming one of our core divisions that we provide executive search services for. Hence we felt launching our own youtube clip was a creative and innovate way to tell local and London based recruitment consultants all about us and our City.”

Life doesn’t get much better than working in Brighton, especially at this time of year. So expand maximized their key message and showed life in their stunning sea view office and asked members of the team to share their thoughts and experiences in the movie clip.

Many of the team have been with expand over the long term, a few since the beginning 10 years ago, which shows the company’s core essence of fun, stability and rewards really shines through and pays off. Check expand recruitment’s youtube story here – http://www.youtube.com/expandrecruitment
